About Elawa Farm Foundation
Position Overview
Elawa Farm Foundation is seeking a part-time, seasonal Education Intern to work directly with the Education Manager to organize and deliver meaningful and accessible educational initiatives at Elawa Farm Foundation. These programs include classes, youth camps, field trips, tours, and family activities, in the areas of agriculture, culinary and nutrition, wellness, and sustainability. Educational opportunities are to be designed for youth and adults of all backgrounds and abilities.
Responsibilities
Assist Education Manager with designing experiential learning curriculum for school and community groups.
Co-facilitate with Education Manager community outreach and bilingual programs for area youth and adults.
Purchase supplies, materials, and snacks for youth camps and other educational programs.
Assist with daily set-up and tear-down of program location.
Assist with the planning of family activities for market festivals and public events.
Collect attendance and metrics from educational programs and public tours.
Assist Education Manager in the management of the demonstration raised beds in the
Discovery Garden, including crop planning, planting, maintenance, and harvest.
Co-lead activities and farm tasks for youth and adults with physical and/or cognitive disabilities.
Collaborate and perform ad hoc tasks with other departments (e.g., set up tables and chairs for programs and events, harvest with Farm Team, etc.).
Elawa Farm is a historic, non-profit farm located in Lake Forest, Illinois. Elawa Farm
Foundation’s mission is to steward a historic farm that enriches greater Lake County as a center
for experiential learning to broaden access to education, nutritious food, and our local food
system. We gather community through food and agriculture with a sustainable farm, weekly
market, learning kitchen, and educational programming for youth and adults.
• Deliver walking tours and family activities on occasional basis.
Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years old with reliable transportation to Elawa Farm
Excitement for teaching and the adventure of learning
Remain calm in a fast-paced environment with young participants
Comfort with interacting, engaging, and adapting with children and program participants
Ability to adapt and operate in a dynamic and creative environment
Ensuring the physical and emotional safety of every child and program participant
Criminal background check will be giving upon hiring
While not required, proficiency in written and spoken Spanish is a plus
Physical Requirements
Requires the ability to setup and teardown of camp supplies
Requires the ability to engage with children and program participants in physical
activities and group projects
Requires the ability to communicate information and ideas
Status: This position is part-time, seasonal, and at-will. Compensation: $13/hour
Schedule: Schedule is approximately 20 hours/week from May 23 through August 31. Must have Saturday availability Weekly schedule to be determined in accordance with program schedule. A list of upcoming programs and events will be provided during the interview.
