Our core mission is to expand education in the greater Lake County area. We offer an array of engaging and exciting classes offered by both our internal team members, as well as guest educators. Whether you are interested in cooking, floral arrangement, pottery, or gardening, our Education Department has something for you. Enroll in a class today, and enjoy a wealth of educational experiences at Elawa Farm.

Currently, we cannot issue refunds for offerings. If a class or event is cancelled on our behalf, you will be notified and issued a full refund.

Jamberry Music

 We offer classes in parks, backyards, living rooms, indoor play spaces, park districts and preschools across the North Shore. In each of these interactive 45-minute classes, you and your little one will bond with each other and make new friends while we sing, dance, play, pretend and experiment with instruments. 

Jamberry takes place every Friday 10-10:45 am & 11:15-12 pm.

Dinner in France

Come get a taste of the French cuisine world as Chef David Oland demos some of France’s most popular dishes. Ever had a snail? This is your chance to try a traditional Escargot a La Bourguignonne as your starter followed by a delicious Sea bass vierge and for your main course a rack of lamb Persillade with a side of sautéed carrots with quatre épices. Sip back and enjoy some French white wine while chef cooks up some delicacies that you can later make in your own home.

Dried Flower Bouquet Social

Come socialize with your friends and make new friends while enjoying prosecco and light appetizers while making your own dried flower bouquet with flowers preserved from our flower fields. Our Dried Flower Bouquet Making social offers a hands-on experience in creating a stunning arrangement that will last long after the seasons change.

Our Farm team will provide you with design guidance. All we ask is that you bring a vase for your flower bouquet (please not much larger than a large mason jar).

No prior experience is necessary—just a passion for flowers and a desire to create something beautiful!

Natural Dye and Cooking Class

Join textile designer Erica Kowalsky of Down To Earth Goods and Chef David for a natural dye and cooking workshop! You will learn to dye your own reusable tote bag using onion skins and Chef David will teach you how to make French Onion Soup. Fall is upon us and as we enter soup season it is the perfect time to save your onion skins from your soup to make your own dye. No materials or experience necessary. Come join us at Elawa Farm!

Prepare for your fall and winter holidays in the Elawa Learning Kitchen with our Pastry Chef Maggie Logan who will make you a pro in the art of pie-making.  This hands-on, immersive class will give you the skills you need to make beautiful pies with seasonal ingredients.  We will cover three forms of “pie”: traditional American pie, French tart, and galette.  Students will bring home what they bake along with recipes.

Essentials of Tuscan Cooking

Experience traditional flavors of Tuscan cooking here at Elawa Farm. Come join us as Chef David Oland teaches you how to make Pappa al pomodoro, followed by a panzanella and finishing off with a Bistecca all Fiorentina. During this class you will participate in assisting the chef prep and help pick fresh herbs from our garden. Come meet new friends or bring your own while you eat some classic Italian dishes and sip on some delicious Chianti Classico to complement your meals.

Paella and Sangria

Craving Spanish Cuisine? Join our Director of Culinary Education, Chef David Oland, most recently of award-winning Tapas restaurant “Mercat a la planxa” in Chicago, for either lunch or dinner cooking class as he demonstrates how to make two types of Paella. A Valencian paella with chicken and rabbit and an arroz negro paella (squid ink and fresh calamari and mussels). Follow along as he creates these authentic Valencian dishes plus several authentic tapas for you to taste, all while sipping on a fresh sangria made by Chef David. Included in the price is an authentic Spanish paella pan and imported bomba rice from Valencia.

Perfect Turkey, Perfect Gravy.

Bring your apron and give thanks for this turkey rescue class by Chef David Oland! You will learn the essentials of cooking traditional turkey and gravy components of Thanksgiving. Chef David will demonstrate brining, seasoning, roasting a turkey whole, as well as breaking down the bird into breasts and legs for faster, more even cooking. He will make turkey stock and a lump-free (we promise!) gravy.

Bee Keeping with Gretta’s Goat’s

Join beekeeper Eric Strong of Gretta's Goats to learn beekeeping basics. This two hour class gives the beginner beekeeper all the information needed to get started with their own hive. This class will cover honey bee biology and life cycle, pests and diseases, foraging habits, and beekeeping equipment and techniques. Each student will get a handout and will participate in "building" a hive from bottom board to top. The class will also simulate the installation of bees and a queen. Think of it as a hands on demonstration of getting a bee hive ready to house a new colony of bees!
